Spring Exercise Tips After Surgery

Many patients have successfully lost over 100 lbs after bariatric surgery. Yet, they must follow a strict diet and bariatric surgery exercises for the surgery to be successful. Over time, these changes can become second nature. However, getting started after surgery can be challenging. Let’s take a closer look at key tips for post-surgery exercise.

Bariatric Surgery Exercise Tips

After surgery, having a strict workout routine is critical for successful weight loss. That’s why your doctor will work with you to develop a custom workout routine to fit your goals and lifestyle.

Start with Low Impact Exercises

Low-impact exercises are the best way to ease into a workout routine while recovering from surgery. Not only will they improve blood circulation and increase your heart rate, but they can also reduce inflammation and aid in the healing process.

Since the weather is warming up, you can incorporate various low-impact outdoor exercises in your routine, such as:

  • Walking
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Kayaking
  • Yoga
  • Horseback riding
  • Rollerblading

Warm Up and Cool Down

Starting each session with a low-intensity warm-up, such as a five-minute walk, gets your blood pumping and supplies your muscles with oxygen. While it elevates your heart rate, it activates your muscles and prepares them for the workout. By loosening your body and getting the blood pumping, you can perform better and avoid injuries.

At the same time, a low-intensity cooldown, such as static stretching, helps your heart rate and blood pressure slowly recover to normal levels. This reduces muscle soreness and prevents cramps and strains after the workout.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is critical when you’re on a strict workout regimen. When you’re hydrated, your heart can pump easier and your muscles work more efficiently. That’s why it’s important to drink water all day long.

Try carrying a large water bottle with you if you have difficulty drinking water throughout the day. That way, you’ll see it constantly and remind yourself to drink it.
