This band restricts how much food enters the stomach and was a popular weight loss procedure because it was seen as less permanent than other gastric surgery options, but also came with certain complications.   Common LAP-BAND complications include food intolerance, band slippage or erosion, heartburn, reflux, and esophageal dilation. Discover how robotic-assisted surgery can enhance precision and improve patient outcomes for various conditions. Robotic Surgery Robotic-assisted surgery refers to the use of advanced robotic systems, such as the da Vinci Surgical System, to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures with greater precision and control. It enhances the capabilities of surgeons by providing better visualization, stability, and dexterity, resulting in improved outcomes and faster recovery times for patients. Robotic-assisted surgery can be used for a wide range of procedures, including urologic surgery, neck surgery, robotic thoracic surgery, and even complex cardiac surgeries. How It Works Procedure: Robotic-assisted surgery works by using robotic surgical systems that are controlled by highly trained surgeons. These robotic systems allow for enhanced dexterity, smaller incisions, and greater precision during complex procedures. Smaller Incisions Unlike traditional surgery, where larger cuts are required, robotic systems make smaller incisions, which significantly reduces the risk of infection and promotes faster healing. The small incisions also result in less scarring. Enhanced Precision The da Vinci Surgical System, for example, is equipped with high-definition 3D vision and robotic arms that can mimic the movements of a surgeon's hands. This allows for more accurate movements, even in hard-to-reach areas, such as the prostate during urologic surgery or the heart during robotic cardiac surgery. Bariatric surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery, encompasses a variety of procedures designed to help individuals lose weight by altering the digestive and metabolic system. Bariatric Surgery limits the amount of food you eat, causing the body to stop storing excess calories and start using its fat supply for energy. This will cause changes in the gut hormones which may impact hunger, satisfaction, and blood sugar control. Today most bariatric surgeries are performed using minimally invasive techniques, called laparoscopic surgery. Here’s a brief overview: Different Bariatric Procedures: Types of Bariatric Surgery Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y): Creates a small stomach pouch and bypasses part of the small intestine, reducing calorie absorption. Sleeve Gastrectomy: Removes a portion of the stomach, creating a tube-like structure, which limits food intake. (see figure 1) Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS): Combines a sleeve gastrectomy with a bypass of a significant portion of the small intestine. (see figure 2) Modified Duodenal Switch (SADI-S): It combines a sleeve gastrectomy with an intestinal bypass, but with only one connection (anastomosis) instead of two, which simplifies the procedure and reduces the risk of complications. Procedure Sleeve Gastrectomy: About 70-80% of the stomach is removed, creating a smaller, tube-shaped stomach (sleeve) that limits food intake. Intestinal Bypass: The small intestine is divided, and a portion is bypassed to reduce calorie and nutrient absorption. The remaining part of the small intestine is connected to the stomach sleeve. Average Surgery Time The surgery typically takes about 3 to 4 hours. This duration can vary depending on the patient’s specific circumstances and the surgeon’s experience. How It Works Restriction: The smaller stomach limits the amount of food you can eat. Malabsorption: Bypassing a portion of the small intestine reduces the absorption of calories and nutrients. Hormonal Changes: The surgery alters gut hormones, reducing hunger and improving satiety. Recovery Period Hospital Stay: Most patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days. This will depend on the patient's recovery after surgery. Full recovery usually takes about 4-6 weeks, during which patients gradually transition from a liquid diet to solid foods using the post-operatively dietary... --- - Published: 2020-02-04 - Modified: 2025-06-27 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/weight-loss-surgery/gastric-bypass/ Gastric bypass surgery Specifically, the Roux-en-Y procedure is a common weight-loss surgery that involves modifying the digestive system to help patients lose weight. Unlike more invasive bariatric procedures, Lap-Band surgery is minimally invasive and adjustable, offering flexibility to suit individual weight loss needs. In this procedure, a silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch that limits food intake. The band can be tightened or loosened over time to adjust the size of the stomach pouch, allowing for gradual weight loss and improved long-term results. Meet Your Surgeon Dr. Jean-Pierre After his general surgery training in Chicago, Dr. JP began his fellowship with a concentration in bariatrics at the Morehouse School of Medicine through Atlanta Medical Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. How It Works Procedure: Stomach Restriction:  The surgeon uses a laparoscopic technique for gastric band placement, where an inflatable silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This band creates a small stomach pouch, which limits the amount of food the patient can consume. The pouch typically holds only about one ounce of food, promoting portion control and reducing calorie intake. By reducing the stomach size, patients are able to feel full after eating small amounts of food, which leads to consistent weight loss. Adjustable Band:  One of the key features of Lap-Band surgery is... --- - Published: 2020-02-04 - Modified: 2025-03-29 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/weight-loss-surgery/register-for-a-free-online-seminar/ Bariatric surgery can help cure chronic obesity. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), often called acid reflux, is a chronic digestive condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and potential damage to the esophagus lining. If you experience frequent heartburn or a burning sensation in your chest, you may have GERD. At Wellstar, we offer effective treatment options to help manage and relieve GERD symptoms, improving your quality of life. How It Works GERD is diagnosed based on your symptoms, medical history, and physical exams. If necessary, additional tests like upper endoscopy, pH monitoring, or esophageal manometry can be used to assess the condition and determine the best course of action for treatment. These tests help evaluate the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) function and the presence of reflux. Comprehensive GERD & Acid Reflux Solutions At Wellstar, we focus on a holistic approach to treating GERD and acid reflux, combining medical expertise with personalized care. Our treatment options are designed to target the root causes of your symptoms and offer long-term relief. Surgical Solutions for Severe GERD: When other treatments are insufficient, we offer advanced surgical options like laparoscopic fundoplication or the LINX procedure. These procedures target the root cause of reflux by strengthening the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), preventing acid from backing up into the esophagus and offering lasting relief from chronic reflux symptoms. Medications to Manage GERD: For many, medications are the first step in treating GERD. Learn how our surgeons provide effective solutions for your health concerns. Incisional Hernia Repair Incisional hernia repair is a surgical procedure designed to address hernias that develop at the site of a previous surgical incision. This condition occurs when internal organs or tissues protrude through a weakened part of the abdominal wall, creating a visible bulge. Ventral hernias, a type of incisional hernia, can be effectively treated using laparoscopic surgery, which offers a minimally invasive approach. Here’s an overview of how the procedure works, the recovery process, and potential risks: How It Works Procedure: 1. Assessment and Preparation: Our surgical team evaluates your medical history, the size and location of the hernia, and any associated symptoms like severe pain or strangulated hernia. Preoperative imaging, such as computed tomography, may be used for precise planning. 2. Repair Options: Depending on the complexity, we offer two main approaches: Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia Repair: This minimally invasive surgery involves small incisions, a tiny video camera, and specialized tools to repair the abdominal wall. Carbon dioxide is used to expand the abdominal cavity, allowing the surgeon to reposition the hernia sac and reinforce the area with synthetic mesh. Open Incisional Hernia Repair: For larger or complex hernias, open surgery may be required. This involves a larger incision to access the hernia site directly and place the surgical mesh for added strength. 3. Surgical Mesh: To prevent recurrence, we use advanced mesh repair techniques to reinforce the weak part of the... --- - Published: 2020-02-04 - Modified: 2025-05-29 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/general-surgery/hiatial-hernia-repair/ Lap-Band Surgery Hiatal hernia repair is a surgical procedure designed to treat a condition where part of the stomach pushes up into the chest cavity through an opening in the diaphragm, known as the hiatus. This condition can lead to various symptoms, including acid reflux, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and regurgitation. The surgery is primarily used to address the hernia and reduce the impact of these symptoms, improving the patient's quality of life. How It Works Procedure: Stomach Repositioning: During the procedure, the surgeon will first reposition the stomach back into the abdominal cavity. This involves moving the stomach away from the chest cavity and returning it to its proper place. Diaphragm Repair: The surgeon then repairs the opening in the diaphragm, making it smaller. This helps prevent the stomach from sliding back up into the chest. In most cases, the surgeon uses stitches or surgical staples to reinforce the diaphragm. Additional Steps: In some cases, the surgeon may also wrap the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophagus, a procedure known as fundoplication. This strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that prevents stomach acid from moving into the esophagus. Average time for surgery: Hiatal hernia repair typically takes 1 to 2 hours. The duration may vary depending on the complexity of the hernia and the patient's overall health. Recovery Post-Operative Care: Most patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after the surgery. The recovery time will vary depending on the individual, but most... --- - Published: 2020-02-04 - Modified: 2025-05-29 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/general-surgery/gallbladder-repair/ What is Gallbladder Removal Surgery? Learn how our expert surgeons can help relieve pain and improve your digestive health efficiently. Gallbladder Removal Surgery Gallbladder removal surgery, also known as cholecystectomy, is a common procedure performed to treat gallstones, inflammation, or other issues with the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver to help digest fats. When the gallbladder becomes diseased, it can cause painful symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Removing the gallbladder can provide relief and prevent further complications. Gallstones can block the common bile duct, causing pain and necessitating further surgical intervention. How It Works: There are two primary methods for gallbladder removal: laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive) and open surgery (traditional). The most common approach is laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a minimally invasive surgery performed with small incisions. The surgeon uses a small video monitor and instruments inserted through these incisions to remove the gallbladder. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This is the preferred method due to its quicker recovery time and less pain. Small incisions, typically 0. 5 to 1 cm in size, are made near the belly button, and a camera (laparoscope) is inserted to help guide the surgeon in removing the gallbladder. Carbon dioxide gas is often used to inflate the abdomen, allowing the surgeon better visibility. Open Gallbladder Removal Surgery: If the gallbladder is severely inflamed or if complications arise, an open gallbladder surgery may be needed. This requires a larger incision, usually... --- - Published: 2020-02-04 - Modified: 2025-06-26 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/patient-resources/exercise-guidance/ Exercise can be grueling work, but it’s scientifically proven to be an important part of weight loss. These minor behaviors include eating your protein first during mealtime, taking smaller bites and chewing thoroughly. These minor tweaks help bariatric patients eat less because they take the time to be mindful during each meal.   Medical practitioners at Wellstar will help educate patients on how behavioral modification will transform their weight loss game. Simply put, weight loss from bariatric surgery can significantly reduce or even eliminate sleep apnea symptoms. By removing excess fatty tissue around the airways, the surgery helps keep them open during sleep, reducing interruptions in breathing. In this blog, you’ll learn how bariatric surgery helps improve sleep apnea and offers hope to those struggling with severe obesity and sleep apnea. Key Takeaways Obesity significantly increases the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), with a 10% weight gain leading to a six-fold increase in risk. Bariatric surgery effectively reduces OSA symptoms by promoting substantial weight loss, with an 80-85% remission rate reported five years post-surgery. Quality of life improvements, including enhanced mobility and reduced daytime sleepiness, are significant benefits for patients after undergoing bariatric surgery. The Connection Between Obesity and Sleep Apnea Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a widespread condition impacting an estimated 39 million adults with obstructive sleep apnea in the United States, thereby representing a major concern for public health. Obesity stands as one of the most common risk factors associated with OSA in adults, and there exists a strong connection between them. Research suggests that individuals who are obese have a notably higher probability of developing OSA compared to those maintaining normal weight. It’s striking to learn that just increasing body weight by 10% can potentially escalate the likelihood of experiencing OSA six times over. This substantial rise in risk stems from added weight exerting more pressure on air passages,... --- - Published: 2025-04-11 - Modified: 2025-05-17 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/the-importance-of-protein-intake-after-gastric-sleeve-surgery/ - Categories: Blog Understanding the importance of protein intake after gastric sleeve surgery is crucial for a successful recovery and sustained weight loss. Protein is essential to healing, maintaining muscle mass, and supporting overall health post-surgery. In this blog, we will explore why protein is vital, how much you need, and how to effectively incorporate it into your diet. Key Takeaways Adequate protein intake of 70 to 100 grams daily is essential for recovery and muscle maintenance after gastric sleeve surgery. Incorporating both animal (e. g. , meats, eggs) and plant-based (e. g. , beans, quinoa) proteins into meals ensures comprehensive nutrient intake. Protein supplements may be necessary post-surgery to meet nutritional needs, particularly when solid food consumption is limited. Why Protein is Crucial After Gastric Sleeve Surgery The significance of protein intake following bariatric surgery is substantial. It plays a central role in tissue repair, immune function, and the preservation of lean muscle mass during the rapid weight-loss phase. In the post-surgical period, the body requires increased protein to support healing and maintain strength. Consuming adequate protein helps protect muscle mass while the body adapts to reduced caloric intake. This is essential for maintaining an active metabolism and preventing fatigue or muscle weakness. Because nutrient absorption is altered after surgery, meals must be intentionally designed to deliver maximum nutritional value—starting with high-quality protein. Medical professionals advise that every meal should include a protein source to ensure consistent delivery of essential amino acids. This guide will take you through the entire process, from preparation and the different surgical methods to recovery, providing a clear picture of each step. Key Takeaways Gallbladder removal surgery, or cholecystectomy, can be performed via laparoscopic or open techniques, with laparoscopic being less invasive and associated with faster recovery. Common indications for gallbladder removal include gallstones, chronic inflammation, and severe abdominal pain, prompting consultation with healthcare providers. Preparation for surgery involves specific preoperative instructions, including fasting and arranging post-surgery transportation, which are critical for a safe procedure and effective recovery. Understanding Gallbladder Removal Surgery Gallbladder removal surgery, also known as cholecystectomy, is a procedure that entails the surgical extraction of the gallbladder—a small organ that stores bile from the liver. While this procedure is commonly performed to address gallstones and inflammation, it is also relevant to individuals who have undergone rapid weight loss, such as after bariatric surgery. In such cases, gallbladder dysfunction can occur due to the body’s metabolic changes post-surgery. There are two primary surgical methods: laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy. Laparoscopic, also known as keyhole surgery, uses several small incisions and is less invasive. Open surgery involves a larger incision and is usually reserved for more complex cases or when complications are present. Choosing the right surgical method depends on the individual’s condition, overall health, and the presence of any post-bariatric anatomical or digestive changes. Professional evaluation and imaging studies help guide this decision, ensuring safe and effective... --- - Published: 2025-04-01 - Modified: 2025-05-17 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/the-effect-of-smoking-on-gerd-and-acid-reflux-what-you-need-to-know/ - Categories: Blog Looking to understand the effect of smoking on GERD and acid reflux? Smoking can worsen these conditions by weakening the lower esophageal sphincter and increasing stomach acid production. This blog explores how smoking impacts GERD and acid reflux symptoms and the benefits of quitting. Quitting smoking leads to a marked reduction in GERD symptoms and improves overall health-related quality of life, emphasizing the need for smoking cessation in GERD management. Lifestyle modifications, including dietary adjustments and weight management, alongside smoking cessation, are essential for effectively managing GERD and preventing complications. Understanding GERD and Acid Reflux Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is commonly known as acid reflux, is a widespread digestive disorder that affects countless individuals around the globe. This condition manifests when stomach acid regularly reverses its course into the esophagus—the conduit between your mouth and stomach—resulting in potential inflammation of the esophageal lining and resulting in discomfort along with various other symptoms. The term gastro-oesophageal reflux disease refers to this same set of problems. The processes involved in acid reflux are intricate and involve several components, such as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), stomach acid, and intra-abdominal pressure. Acidic contents from the stomach can make their way back up into the esophagus if there’s an abnormal weakening or relaxation of LES—a muscular valve situated where your esophagus concludes—thereby leading to... --- - Published: 2025-03-25 - Modified: 2025-05-17 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/signs-you-might-need-a-revision-weight-loss-surgery-expert-insights/ - Categories: Blog Weight loss surgery can be a life-changing step, but for some, the journey doesn’t always go as planned. This blog will explore everything you need to know about hunger after gastric bypass surgery, including how hunger signals change, the role of hunger hormones, and effective strategies for managing both physical and psychological hunger post-surgery. Key Takeaways Gastric bypass surgery alters hunger signals, leading to a sensation of constant hunger despite a smaller stomach, necessitating effective management strategies. Hormonal changes post-surgery, particularly reduced ghrelin and increased GLP-1 and PYY, influence appetite and satiety, making understanding these changes essential for weight management. Effective hunger management involves sufficient protein intake, staying hydrated to differentiate between thirst and hunger, and adopting healthy eating habits while addressing psychological factors triggering ‘head hunger’. Understanding Hunger After Gastric Bypass Gastric bypass surgery fundamentally alters your digestive system by creating a smaller stomach pouch and rerouting the small intestine, which significantly impacts how your body processes hunger and fullness. While this weight loss surgery helps patients reduce their food intake, it does not eliminate the sensation of hunger altogether. Instead, it modifies the way hunger signals are sent to the brain. After surgery, many patients experience changes in hunger patterns. While some may feel reduced hunger due to hormonal shifts, others might notice increased hunger sensations due to metabolic adjustments or lifestyle factors. Understanding the difference between true stomach hunger—which is a physiological need for food—and psychological cravings, often triggered by habits, emotions, or external cues, is essential... --- - Published: 2025-02-08 - Modified: 2025-07-05 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/key-differences-between-lap-band-gastric-sleeve-surgery-explained/ - Categories: Blog Discover the key differences between Lap Band gastric sleeve surgery. This blog explains how each procedure works, as well as its risks, benefits, and long-term expectations, to help you decide what’s best for your weight loss journey. Key Takeaways Lap band surgery uses an adjustable band to create a smaller stomach pouch, while gastric sleeve surgery involves permanently removing a large portion of the stomach. Lap band surgery is reversible and adjustable, providing more flexibility, whereas gastric sleeve surgery is a permanent procedure that requires a lifelong commitment. Gastric sleeve surgery generally leads to greater and more sustained weight loss compared to lap band surgery, making it a preferred option for significant weight loss goals. Overview of Lap Band and Gastric Sleeve Surgeries Gastric Sleeve and Lap Band surgeries are two bariatric procedures designed to support long-term weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions. These surgical interventions help individuals struggling with obesity, especially those who have not achieved lasting success through diet, exercise, or other medical interventions. While both surgeries work by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, their approaches, effectiveness, and long-term benefits vary significantly. Lap Band surgery involves placing an adjustable silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach, creating a small stomach pouch that limits food intake and promotes early satiety. However, due to higher long-term failure rates, frequent complications, and the need for adjustments, Lap Band surgery is now less commonly performed and often replaced by more effective bariatric procedures. In contrast,... --- - Published: 2025-02-04 - Modified: 2025-05-09 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/what-is-gastric-sleeve-recovery-time-like-essential-insights-tips/ - Categories: Blog, Weight Loss Tips Wondering what is gastric sleeve recovery time like? Typically, recovery takes about four to six weeks. This blog will guide you through each stage, from the hospital stay to long-term lifestyle adjustments. Key Takeaways Gastric sleeve surgery significantly reduces stomach capacity, facilitating weight loss through decreased food intake while maintaining natural digestion. The immediate recovery period involves a hospital stay of one to two days for monitoring and pain management, followed by strict dietary guidelines that transition from liquids to solid foods over several weeks. Long-term success post-surgery necessitates lifestyle changes, including adherence to a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and psychological support to navigate emotional and behavioral challenges. Understanding Gastric Sleeve Surgery Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, involves removing approximately 80% of the stomach to create a smaller, sleeve-like shape. This procedure significantly reduces stomach volume, leading to decreased food intake while preserving the natural digestive process. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, which alters the intestines, the gastric sleeve maintains the existing digestive pathway, minimizing the risk of malabsorption-related complications. This surgery is typically recommended for individuals struggling with obesity who have not achieved sustained weight loss through traditional approaches. Patients often have obesity-related conditions such as severe sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, or hypertension. But when is gallbladder removal necessary? This depends on several health factors and individual symptoms you may have. Knowing the signs that tell you whether gallbladder removal surgery is necessary will help you make the correct medical choice. Understanding the Function of the Gallbladder The gallbladder plays a vital role in the digestive system by storing bile, a product of the liver that helps digest fats. However, problems may manifest within the gallbladder, mainly when gallstones are formed. Gallstones are hard deposits that can block the flow of bile and cause severe discomfort. If these become too serious, then gallbladder removal surgery might be necessary to prevent the symptoms from getting worse or to prevent further damage. Signs That Gallbladder Removal May Be Necessary Knowing the symptoms that signal the need for gallbladder removal is important. The most common signs and symptoms include the following: Severe Abdominal Pain: Persistent and severe pain in the right upper abdomen, which at times radiates backward toward your back or the right shoulder, could be indicative that gallbladder removal surgery has to be performed. This pain is caused by the gallstones obstructing the bile ducts and causing inflammation or an infection. Bouts of Nausea and Vomiting: If you are repeatedly experiencing nausea and vomiting, this could be due to a malfunctioning in your gallbladder. Such symptoms usually come immediately after consuming fatty foods since the gallbladder is unable to secrete the required... --- - Published: 2024-08-13 - Modified: 2024-10-23 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/what-is-gerd-symptoms-causes-and-treatment/ - Categories: Blog Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a chronic medical condition affecting millions of people worldwide. To handle the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease effectively, it is essential to understand what this disease is and what its causes are. This article explains the causes of GERD and its symptoms and gives an overview of available treatment options. What Is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease? So, what is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease? Occasionally, the stomach acid flows back up into your esophagus. It may result in discomfort in your esophagus, which is a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease. While occasional acid reflux is not a big concern, the symptoms of GERD can be really harsh and cause complications. What Causes Gastroesophageal Reflux The key to effective treatment is identifying the underlying cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD is usually a consequence of chronic acid reflux left untreated, which causes the lower esophageal sphincter not to close properly. When the lower esophageal sphincter fails to close properly, the stomach acid rises to the esophagus, causing pain and other related symptoms. Obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and even taking medications like asthma medications and many others can also be attributing causes of GERD. What Are GERD Symptoms and How Do You Recognize Them? Acid reflux symptoms vary between individuals and may not always be apparent. The most commonly recognized symptom of acid reflux is heartburn, especially accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pains, regurgitation of food or sour liquid, and difficulty when swallowing food, coupled with a... --- - Published: 2024-08-09 - Modified: 2024-11-19 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/what-happens-if-acid-reflux-and-gerd-go-untreated/ - Categories: Blog Gastroesophageal reflux disease and acid reflux are very common, with millions of people around the world suffering from these conditions. Occasional acid reflux may not be a big deal to many, but unattended acid reflux can result in serious health-related problems over time. This article discusses what occurs if GERD goes untreated and explains possible complications that might come about. The Dangers of Untreated GERD What happens if GERD goes untreated? If left untreated, gastroesophageal reflux disease can result in really serious health complications. GERD results from stomach acid frequently reaching as far up as the esophagus and irritating its lining. This acid reflux can irritate the esophagus, causing inflammation over time—a condition called esophagitis—which may cause more serious problems. One of the most serious complications of GERD is the development of Barrett’s esophagus, a condition in which the tissue lining the esophagus changes to resemble the intestinal lining. This increases a person’s risk of having esophageal cancer. The continual exposure of the esophagus to stomach acid when acid reflux is left untreated may bring about stricture or narrowing of the esophagus because of scarring, which may cause dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). Untreated acid reflux can also result in chronic coughing, asthma, and other respiratory problems. The acid might travel into the lungs, irritating and inflaming them. If you don’t treat GERD, it may trigger laryngitis, characterized by hoarseness of voice, pain in the throat, and dysphonia because the esophagus and throat region are exposed to the stomach acid. The Long-Term... --- - Published: 2024-08-06 - Modified: 2024-11-19 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/useful-insights-into-how-diet-affects-gastroesophageal-reflux-disease/ - Categories: Blog Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition that affects millions of people all over the world. Diet plays a vital role in influencing the symptoms of GERD since food can either induce or reduce discomfort. Knowing how diet can affect GERD can be instrumental in managing its symptoms and improving a patient’s quality of life. How Diet Affects GERD Diet plays a vital role in keeping GERD under control. The kind of food and liquids ingested may trigger or alleviate the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. For instance, fatty foods, fried foods, chocolate, caffeinated drinks, and spicy food increase the likelihood of acid reflux. At the same time, oatmeal, ginger, and leafy greens may have the opposite effect on these symptoms. The role of diet in GERD is important, as a correct diet dramatically decreases the severity of acid reflux. Choosing a Diet for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease A diet aimed at controlling and treating GERD should be carefully considered. Patients should avoid high-fat-content food since this will loosen the lower esophageal sphincter and make it possible for the stomach acid to return to the esophagus. A strict diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains should be taken instead. These foods are much less likely to result in reflux, will help you maintain a healthy weight, and are critical in controlling the symptoms of GERD. An unhealthy diet may increase the production of acids and weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, thus aggravating symptoms of GERD. On the other hand, a planned... --- - Published: 2024-07-25 - Modified: 2025-04-14 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/can-you-get-gastric-bypass-twice-exploring-the-possibilities/ - Categories: Blog Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most common and effective weight loss surgeries, enabling many to achieve significant and long-term weight loss. For some who have already had gastric bypass, they may wonder if you can have gastric bypass twice. Understanding the conditions under which a second operation would be done and what to consider is instrumental in that. Understanding Revision Bariatric Surgery Can you have bariatric surgery twice? Yes, it is possible, but it’s called revision bariatric surgery. Revision surgery may be considered in instances when the initial gastric bypass does not turn out as desired or if complications occur. You may be able to get gastric bypass surgery again, but careful evaluation by an expert weight loss surgeon will be required. When Is a Second Gastric Bypass Considered? Several factors can prompt the consideration of a second gastric bypass surgery. These include inadequate weight loss, significant weight regains, or complications such as a stretched stomach pouch or an enlarged stoma. In such cases, you can have weight loss surgery twice to get the required results. Risks and Benefits of a Second Gastric Bypass Repeated gastric bypass surgery has its risks and benefits. One significant benefit is the potential for further weight loss with ensuing health gains. The risks, however, are equally important: enhanced surgical complications, a longer recovery time, etc. It would help if you discussed these factors with your weight loss surgeon. Both allow people to experience life-changing weight loss and health improvement potentially, but there is value in understanding the distinction so you can make an educated decision. This blog will help you decide between Roux-en-Y vs. Sleeve Gastrectomy. Roux-en-Y vs. Sleeve Gastrectomy: How Do These Options Differ? When choosing between Roux-en-Y vs. Sleeve Gastrectomy, consider the following Surgical Complexity: Roux-en-Y is much more complex than Sleeve Gastrectomy, as the intestines need to be rerouted. Absorption of Nutrients: In Roux-en-Y, the patient may need lifelong supplements as the normal process of absorption gets altered. At the same time, in sleeve gastrectomy, the absorption of nutrients is usually normal. Weight Loss Outcomes: Both methods demonstrate an impressive weight reduction, although some publications have mentioned that Roux-en-Y might achieve a slightly higher weight loss than Sleeve Gastrectomy. Recovery Time: In this scenario, sleeve gastrectomy is more often associated with a shorter recovery time because this procedure is less invasive. Health Benefits Both surgeries significantly improve or even abolish conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. They also improve mobility, quality of life, and life expectancy. Possible Risks Roux-en-Y also has some of the general risks associated with intestinal blockages, nutrition deficiencies, or complications involving rerouting of intestines. Consequently, sleeve gastrectomy might cause staple line leaks, acid reflux, and a deficiency of many vitamins. One consideration for this life-changing step should be understanding the types of weight loss surgery available. This article will give you an overview of three main types of weight loss surgery to consider. Gastric Bypass Surgery Gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y, is among the most common and successful weight loss surgery variations. The primary approach is to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach and directly connect it to the small intestine. This operation effectively closes off quite a large part of the stomach. It bypasses the first part of the small intestine, severely limiting food intake and overall caloric absorption. Advantages of Gastric Bypass: Long-term loss of 60–80% of excess weight. Alterations in gut hormones that reduce appetite and increase satiety. Improves obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Potential Risks: Nutrient deficiencies are a result of poor absorption. Dumping syndrome, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Dietary recommendations and vitamin and mineral supplementation must be followed lifelong. Sleeve Gastrectomy The second type of weight loss surgery is sleeve gastrectomy, in which the stomach’s volume is reduced by around 80%. It entails performing a surgery that involves making two cuts on the stomach, then stapling and removing nearly eighty percent of the stomach to turn it into a tube. Advantages of Sleeve Gastrectomy: Significant weight loss, equivalent to 50–70% excess weight loss. Does not change the intestines, reducing or... --- - Published: 2024-07-22 - Modified: 2024-10-23 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/what-to-eat-after-gallbladder-surgery-recovery-tips/ - Categories: Blog Recovery from gallbladder surgery involves not only the rest that you need but also following a diet that helps in healing and recovery. Knowing what to eat after gallbladder surgery can make all the difference during this recovery phase. Here is a simple guide that will help you sail through this phase. Why Diet Matters Post-Surgery Your body had to make numerous adjustments following surgery while getting used to living without the gallbladder, which was helping you digest fat. Eating the right foods can help control diarrhea and symptoms of indigestion, ensuring an easier recovery. What to Eat After Gallbladder Removal Surgery Food choice is crucial. After your gallbladder surgery, begin with a clear liquid diet and introduce solid foods afterward. Some recommended options include: Clear Broths and Soups: These are gentle on the stomach and help to rehydrate a person. Plain Rice and Pasta: Easily digestible and can be taken with light, low-fat sauces. Steamed or Boiled Vegetables: Carrots, zucchini, and green beans are very digestible and full of nutrients. Lean Proteins: Skinless chicken, turkey, and fish provide essential nutrients without the extra fat. What to Eat After Gallbladder Surgery: Dos and Don’ts Do’s: Eat Smaller Meals: Consuming minor, more frequent meals can help prevent overloading your digestive system. Fluids: Drink plenty of water to help digestion and prevent constipation. Gradually Introduce Fiber: Increase your intake of fiber-rich foods like oats, barley, and fruits to avoid bloating and gas. Don'ts: High-Fat Foods: Avoid fried foods, fatty meats, and full-fat... --- - Published: 2024-06-25 - Modified: 2024-10-23 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/can-you-have-sex-after-gastric-sleeve-surgery/ - Categories: Blog Some societies consider sex a taboo subject, but it is important to consider how long to wait after gastric sleeve to have sex. If you don’t have this discussion, you risk compromising the effectiveness of the treatment. While one of the more appreciated aspects of gastric sleeve surgery is an enhanced sex life, it may not be possible immediately after surgery. Let’s discuss this often-avoided subject and how it affects your recovery following surgery. Coincidence, Compliments, and Sex! The body is often the focal point of sexual interactions, enhancing the insecurities of obesity or being overweight. This can affect your sex life, as confidence plays a crucial role in determining activeness. A person who is in shape receives more compliments and feels more confident, resulting in a more active sex life. Research shows that weight loss enhances physical attributes that make a person more attractive. In addition, patients who undergo these procedures experience higher libido and intensified feelings. However, a downside to sex after gastric sleeve is hormonal imbalance because of rapid weight loss. This can cause mood changes, causing your sex drive to increase one minute and decrease the next moment. It is advisable to schedule routine checkups with your doctor to ensure you address issues early and enhance the quality of the treatment. Sometimes, inflammation, painful gallstones, and infections can cause discomfort, affecting the quality of your life. If you have recently undergone treatment and are struggling to sleep after gallbladder surgery, this article is for you. Sleeping After Gallbladder Surgery This invasive procedure entails pumping air into the abdominal cavity, allowing the surgeon to conduct surgery with ease. After the incisions are closed, it is normal to feel bloated for the next few days. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may feel surges of pain from the excess gas pressing against your incisions. If you feel extreme discomfort and are wondering how to sleep after gallbladder removal, here are helpful tips to improve your nights. Sleep on Your Back or Left Side An effective way to sleep after gallbladder removal is to sleep on your left side or back. This prevents damage to the surgery site and other health complications. In addition, too much pressure on the incisions can increase discomfort, making your nights longer. Doctors recommend sleeping on your back until the incisions heal or discomfort subsides. Take Prescription or OTC Relievers If symptoms persist, your doctor may prescribe an oral relief medication to manage the discomfort in the days following your procedure. The first few weeks usually come with several challenges, such as bad breath or halitosis. This can be a shock to many patients, but don’t be alarmed! Bad breath after gastric sleeve surgery is a normal side effect that doesn’t last long. Let’s look at some of the causes to help you make an informed decision about your health and overall well-being. GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) Gastric sleeve surgery entails removing part of the stomach to reduce the amount of food that can be consumed. In turn, this reduces the amount of calories you absorb, leading to weight loss. Unfortunately, this adjustment in the digestive system causes food to move slower than it should. This causes acid buildup, which flows back into the mouth. This is a common cause of bad breath after sleeve surgery. Ketosis Ketosis refers to the body’s ability to burn fat. However, during this process, the body releases ketones, which have a fruity smell that is often considered foul. The smell is associated with a byproduct of the ketones called acetone. This is another cause of bad breath after gastric sleeve surgery. Dehydration Dehydration is a side effect of sleeve surgery. Patients can forget to take water because of dietary changes, resulting in bad breath. You can rectify the problem by maintaining the “8 glasses a day” rule, avoiding fizzy drinks,... --- - Published: 2024-06-04 - Modified: 2024-12-30 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/why-you-should-avoid-gummy-vitamins-after-bariatric-surgery/ - Categories: Blog Weight is a major concern across the country, with 2 in 5 adults being overweight. This has led to innovative treatments like bariatric surgery to help obese patients lose weight. The aim of the procedure is to alter your digestive system so that you feel full after a small meal and absorb fewer calories. If you undergo bariatric surgery, there are several lifestyle changes you need to make. These changes may include a modified diet, regular exercise, and counseling sessions to help you adapt. When it comes to diet modification, let’s look at reasons why you should avoid gummy vitamins after bariatric surgery. Bariatric Surgery and Vitamin Deficiency Bariatric surgery changes your digestive system to reduce calorie intake. Unfortunately, this can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, compromising your overall health. In addition, prescribed medication after surgery can interfere with the absorption of vital minerals and vitamins. You can avoid these issues by talking to your surgeon about how to supplement your diet after surgery. What Are Gummy Vitamins? Supplements are essential after bariatric surgery, as they replenish deficient vitamins and minerals. However, gummy vitamins can cause digestive complications for some individuals. These chewy, candy-like dietary supplements contain water-soluble vitamins and are fortified with nutrients like vitamins B and C and folic acid. If you are considering gummy vitamins after a gastric sleeve procedure, consult a professional to determine if they are a suitable option. Why No Gummy Vitamins After Bariatric Surgery? Bariatric Surgery Eligibility Criteria Your healthcare provider will take into account a set of predetermined criteria when considering your eligibility for a bariatric weight loss consultation. Strategies including meal planning and cooking bariatric-friendly meals at home should be adopted to support these goals. Bariatric Meal Planning The best way to approach bariatric meal planning is to break up your recovery into stages. As your body heals and you get accustomed to the changes made to your digestive system, you will need to make adjustments to your diet. Here are some guidelines to plan for during each stage of post-bariatric recovery:  Post-Surgery - Directly after your procedure, you will be on a liquid diet made up of light liquids such as gelatin and broth. This will continue for about a week after you leave the hospital. Second Week - As you enter the second week of recovery, you can increase the variety of liquids in your diet. Items to try adding in include protein shakes, pudding, and yogurt. Third to Fourth Weeks - Once you get to weeks three and four of recovery, you can open up your diet further by cooking foods that are high in protein at home and pureeing them before eating. By the fifth week, soft, non-fibrous vegetables can also be simply prepared and pureed at home. Staying healthy in the long term requires combining bariatric surgery with lifestyle adjustments such as regular exercise, a good diet, and more. Long-Term Fitness Tips After Bariatric Surgery  After bariatric surgery, easing into a regular post-bariatric exercise routine can help you stay heathy and keep excess weight off for good. Establishing an effective fitness routine can be challanging, especially if you aren’t used to exercise. Starting small and testing out a variery of exercises is a great way for patients to find out what works for you without overwhelming yourself. Vary Your Routine  It’s hard to stick to an exercise routine that has become stale and boring. Incorporating a healthy amount of variety into your exercise plans can help avoid burnout and keep you engaged and motivated to reach your fitness goals. Switch up your routine every four to six weeks by experimenting with different types of workouts, such as cycling, water aerobics, or frisbee. Invest in a Home Gym  Without a dedicated workout space, you’re less likely to stick to your post-bariatric exercise routine. If you feel self-conscious about working out at the gym or don’t want to spend time commuting to a fitness center, consider investing in a home gym so you have all the equipment you need at home, allowing you to fit in workouts at your convenience. You don’t need to invest... --- - Published: 2023-10-12 - Modified: 2025-06-17 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/what-is-a-sleeve-gastrectomy-and-is-it-right-for-you/ - Categories: Blog The field of bariatric weight loss has grown exponentially in recent decades and today patients can pick and choose the bariatric treatments that work best for them. There are several types of bariatric weight-loss procedures, including gastric bypass, duodenal switch, and gastric sleeve surgery. Different procedures vary in how they alter the digestive tract. The sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most common bariatric procedures available. With a success rate ranging between 80% and 90% and a particularly low chance of complications, the sleeve gastrectomy promotes weight loss by altering the size of a patient’s stomach. What Is a Sleeve Gastrectomy? A sleeve gastrectomy, also referred to as gastric sleeve surgery, is a laparoscopic procedure that involves removing up to 80% of the stomach, leaving behind a small, sleeve-like (hence the name) portion about the size and shape of a banana. Because the procedure limits the amount of food the stomach can hold, patients feel satisfied while eating less. The procedure also reduces the amount of ghrelin—often called the hunger hormone—that is produced by the body, helping patients lose weight and keep it off. Gastric Sleeve Surgery: Factors to Consider If you're considering gastric sleeve surgery, talk with your doctor about your unique health and lifestyle factors to find out if you meet the criteria for the procedure. BMI Gastric sleeve surgery is often recommended for individuals with a BMI, or body mass index, of 40 or higher who have not had success losing weight through diet and exercise alone. After rapid weight loss, your body may need a period of adjustment. There are several strategies to get yourself and your body back on track with your weight-loss journey. To safely begin losing weight again, you will need to reassess and change your daily habits. Increase Exercise Frequency or Intensity After weight loss, your metabolic rate slows which can make losing additional weight difficult to achieve. Enhancing your current workout plan to include more intensive or frequent exercise such as strength or resistance training to increase the number of calories you burn. Stay Active Frequent exercise is important, however, research shows that non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), such as fidgeting while seated or standing, can increase your metabolic rate up to 94%. Track Calorie Intake Reports show on average, people consume about twice the amount of calories than the amount estimated. By tracking your calorie and macronutrient (protein, fat, and carbs) intake, you will have a more accurate idea of what your body is consuming, which will allow you to modify your diet as needed. Eat More Fiber Fiber slows down food as it moves through the digestive tract, reducing the amount of calories your body absorbs. Research shows that all types of fiber can help with weight loss, however, soluble fiber is the most effective fiber form for maintaining a satisfied appetite. Eat More Protein Increasing... --- - Published: 2023-09-19 - Modified: 2025-06-17 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/what-is-da-vinci-weight-loss-surgery-understanding-the-procedure/ - Categories: Blog Bariatric surgery procedures can be an important part of an ongoing weight-loss journey. These surgeries come with many benefits in addition to supporting weight loss, including promoting improvements in cardiovascular health, blood sugar, energy levels, quality of life, and longevity. Traditional weight loss surgery involves large incisions and long recovery times. Da Vinci weight loss surgery is a newer alternative that is less invasive and can streamline the recovery process. What is Da Vinci Weight Loss Surgery? Da Vinci procedures are an example of robotic bariatric surgeries. These procedures are completed with the assistance of a surgical robot called the da Vinci Robotic System. The robot does not perform the surgeries itself. A bariatric surgeon uses the robot as a tool to assist in the operation. The surgeon will make small incisions in the abdomen, through which the da Vinci Robotic System can be inserted. The robot’s four arms act as surgical instruments that can be manipulated by the surgeon through the robot’s console. The surgeon uses the console to guide the robot, and the da Vinci system translates these hand movements into surgical movements in the abdomen. The robot has a greater range of motion than a human hand, allowing more precise movements to be made. The system also includes a camera that can be controlled through the console, providing the surgical team with improved visualization of the field with high definition, 3D views. The surgeon is able to see the surgical field through a magnification that is ten times greater than what the... --- - Published: 2023-09-15 - Modified: 2023-09-07 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/weight-loss-specialists-tips-for-improving-body-image-and-self-esteem-after-surgical-weight-loss/ - Categories: Blog Weight loss surgery has been shown to significantly improve conditions related to obesity including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and acid reflux, and reduces the risk of death from these and other conditions. While weight loss surgery can benefit the body, the mental impact of weight loss can pose another challenge for bariatric patients. It’s important to manage both physical and mental health as a part of surgical weight loss recovery. Tips for Promoting Body Image and Self-Esteem There are plenty of simple lifestyle adjustments that can be made to help develop a body image, promote self-esteem, and improve feelings of self-confidence. Here are some helpful tips that can easily be incorporated into your routine to help support mental health following surgical weight loss: Adjust Self-Talk - The way that you think about yourself matters. Instead of focusing on things about yourself that you’d like to change, try to practice positive self-talk.  Make time to think about the qualities you love about yourself so you can learn to appreciate your body. Enjoy Self-Care - Make self-care activities a part of your weekly routine. Taking time to nurture your body through activities like taking a bath, listening to your favorite music, or just relaxing will help give your mental health a boost. Avoid Comparison - Do your best to avoid comparing yourself and your weight loss progress to others. Additionally, try not to let images posted on social media affect how you see yourself. Remember that your weight-loss journey is unique. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid moves into the esophagus causing a burning sensation, or heartburn, felt in the lower chest Acid reflux is common and can last for a few minutes up to a few hours. However, if acid reflux symptoms are persistent, two or more times a week could be an indication of GERD. Symptoms Persistent heartburn behind your breastbone is the most common GERD symptom, which often includes: Burning feeling in the stomach, chest, neck, and throat Sour, acidic, or bitter taste at the back of your mouth Regurgitation of food or liquid Other Symptoms Besides heartburn, noticeable symptoms may include: Nausea Bad breath Trouble breathing or swallowing Vomiting Worn tooth enamel Sleep issues Asthma Laryngitis Causes  GERD affects 15-30% of the United States population, and anyone can develop the condition. Health Conditions Certain health conditions can make you more likely to develop GERD: Overweight or obesity Connective tissue diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, or lupus Anxiety or stress Pregnancy Asthma Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Lifestyle and Diet Lifestyle and dietary factors can affect the severity of GERD: Certain foods, such as fatty or fried, spicy, and acidic fruits Certain liquids, such as coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks Consuming large meals Eating right... --- - Published: 2023-07-13 - Modified: 2025-02-13 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/incisional-hernias-causes-symptoms-and-risk-factors/ - Categories: Blog Before undergoing any surgical procedure, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with potential complications that may arise during your recovery. Different procedures carry different incidence rates for certain complications. In the case of abdominal surgeries like bariatric procedures, incisional hernias are one potential complication. What are Incisional Hernias?   Incisional hernias occur when abdominal tissues and nearby organs protrude further than they’re supposed to, causing a bulge in the abdominal area. These hernias most commonly form at or near surgical scars. Incisional hernias occur after 15% to 20% of surgical procedures near the abdomen. Incisional hernias develop when the abdominal wall does not heal properly following a surgical operation. When incisions don’t close properly, the area around the incision site can weaken. Organs and tissues push against this weakened area and eventually protrude through the gap, causing a visible bulge. Incisional hernias can occur weeks or even years after an abdominal surgery but are most likely to develop in the three to six months following the procedure.   Symptoms of Incisional Hernias  The most obvious symptom of an incisional hernia is a bulge in the abdominal area, which may be more visible when performing certain activities such as standing, lifting, or coughing. Other symptoms may include:  Fever  Abdominal pain  Constipation or diarrhea  Burning or aching in the abdomen  Nausea and vomiting  Incisional Hernia Risk Factors  Certain factors can make an individual more likely to develop an incisional hernia. Formulating healthy meal prep and portion control strategies is a key part of promoting a successful recovery. For bariatric surgery patients, there are few things more important than healthy meal planning.   Dietary Changes for Bariatric Patients Undergoing bariatric surgery is an important step for many in working towards a healthier future, but it’s important to pair it with healthy lifestyle strategies. Diet is a major area that bariatric patients should focus on during recovery. Bariatric procedures typically alter the way the digestive tract functions or how it is structured. After bariatric surgery, the digestive system often responds differently to foods than it did before. Post-surgery recovery means making changes to your diet to ensure your body can still process food after your procedure.   Portion Control after Bariatric Surgery After surgery, bariatric patients are usually provided a list of guidelines for the optimal post-surgery diet. For example, a doctor may make recommendations that include eating small balanced meals, avoiding foods that are high in fats and sugar, and staying away from foods that are difficult to digest, like raw fruits and vegetables, pork, steak, and bread. Controlling your intake can be difficult, but the following tips should help you stay on track for a smooth recovery. Developing a healthy relationship with food is an essential part of your weight-loss surgery journey, and that includes learning how to handle food cravings. Schedule Your Meals  One solution for how to control food cravings is to stick to a consistent meal schedule. Skipping regularly scheduled meals can cause hunger and cravings to significantly increase, which can result in overeating at the next meal or relying on convenient but unhealthy food choices. Try Smaller Portions  If you find that you’re getting hungry in between meals, try spreading out your calorie intake by eating smaller portions 5 times a day instead of 3. This can help keep your blood sugar at a more consistent level and reduce the occurrence of blood pressure spikes that feed cravings.   Experiment with Healthy Alternatives  When you’re trying to figure out how to curb food cravings, it can help to get creative in the kitchen. Food cravings are typically for less nutrient-dense foods that aren’t a recommended part of your post-surgery diet. Fortunately, there are plenty of healthy alternatives you can prepare to satisfy your cravings. Try zucchini noodles or spaghetti squash in place of pasta or frozen fruits, like bananas or grapes, rather than candy. Drink Plenty of Water  Staying hydrated is another great solution for controlling food cravings. When you’re dehydrated, you’re more likely to experience hunger and strong food cravings. Changing your diet and increasing your activity levels are important parts of post-surgery recovery, and patients should also work on building a healthy relationship with food. Mindful eating is a strategy many bariatric patients use to help them work toward this goal. What is Mindful Eating? Mindful eating applies the practice of mindfulness—often used during meditation and as an anxiety management strategy—to how individuals think about and interact with food. Mindfulness encourages individuals to focus on physical and emotional sensations and pay attention to the present moment. Mindful eating aims to increase conscious awareness during the eating process and apply mindfulness strategies to eating. Mindful eating was developed in direct opposition to mindless eating. Mindless eating is a way of consuming food while distracted—this is not ideal, especially for those looking to lose weight. It can manifest as eating while watching TV, snacking while working, or filling up on party snacks while talking to friends. During mindless eating, the individual is disconnected from the eating process, which can easily lead to overeating. Mindless eating can quickly become an unhealthy habit that contributes to issues like weight gain and improper nutrition. Mindful Eating and Weight Management The goal of mindful eating is to promote a positive eating experience that feels nourishing to the mind and body. In fact, 77% of all U. S. adults include at least one kind of supplement in their diet. Supplements are especially important for bariatric patients to help make sure nutritional requirements are met post-surgery. Multivitamin The first place to start when planning a daily supplement regimen is finding a great multivitamin. Multivitamins contain a wide variety of vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function properly. They are particularly useful if you’re worried about not meeting all of your daily nutritional needs through diet. There are many multivitamins to choose from, including ones designed specifically for bariatric patients. Your healthcare provider can help you select one that is right for you.   Fish Oil Fish oil is often referred to as a “superfood” because it contains omega-3s. This is one of the most effective supplements for a healthy body. Fish oil has many potential health benefits, including reducing inflammation, boosting your mood, and helping with the symptoms of allergies and asthma. It’s also been linked to improvements in health in many areas of the body, like the eyes, heart, skin, liver, and bones. Calcium Getting enough calcium is important for supporting the bones, as well as the cardiovascular, muscular, and nervous systems. It also plays a role in body strength and proper blood flow. Calcium deficiencies can lead to a number of issues, including fatigue, osteoporosis, tooth decay, and depression. Stepping on the scale, however, is not the only way to measure the success of your weight-loss journey. Non-scale victories are a useful alternative that can help you stay on the right path. What are Non-Scale Victories? Non-scale victories or NSVs are beneficial changes that result from the implementation of healthy lifestyle strategies, like a regular fitness routine or a balanced diet. These are improvements or changes that are not tracked with a scale. NSVs give a more comprehensive picture of how your efforts to improve your health are benefitting your life as a whole.   Clothes Fit Differently One simple way to track the success of your weight-loss journey is to keep an eye on whether your clothes fit you differently. Pay attention to whether your pants feel looser or if your shirts are baggier. You can also check whether you can fit into old clothes you had packed into storage or see if smaller sizes provide a better fit when you’re shopping for new clothing items. Increased Energy Levels Another way to tell if your lifestyle adjustments are making an impact is to see if you feel a difference in your energy levels. Healthy habits like exercising regularly and eating a nutritious diet can make you feel more energetic. They can also improve sleep quality, which helps you feel rested so you can start the day with more energy. To start, your doctor might even recommend you change your dressings every day. Your provider will give you a specific recommendation for how often to replace the gauze on your wounds. Here are some tips to follow for proper wound care: Clean Hands  Whether you or a loved one change your bandages, it is critical that you wash your hands first. This will prevent germs from contaminating the wound site. Remember to use warm or hot water and antibacterial soap to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds before touching the wound or the dressing.   Avoid Ointments  Stay away from any lotions, creams, or ointments, even if they are marketed as being ‘anti-bacterial. ” Bariatric surgery incisions need to be kept clean and dry, and applying anything other than water and soap to the wound can get in the way of the healing process. Hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol should also be avoided.   Cover the Wound  The wound should be covered at all times as you recover from bariatric surgery. If you drink beverages other than water, choose ones that are low in calories and sugar. Aim for an overall intake of between 48-62 ounces of liquid a day. Water is not only essential for most bodily functions, but it also helps you feel satiated throughout the day.   Add Vitamins Taking a multivitamin or other supplements can help ensure you don't develop nutritional deficiencies. When you set out on your fitness journey with clear objectives, you’re more likely to stay motivated and work hard to meet your goals. Contrary to what this weight-loss surgery myth would suggest, there are several different types of bariatric surgeries that involve different procedures and techniques.   A few of the most common procedures include: Gastric Sleeve — The gastric sleeve procedure changes the shape of the stomach from a pouch to a sleeve that is often compared to a banana.   Roux-en-Y — This surgery both reduces the size of the stomach and changes how food passes through the intestines. Duodenal-Switch — The duodenal-switch procedure is like the Roux-en-Y in that it affects both stomach size and how the intestines function, but this treatment bypasses more of the intestines than the Roux-en-Y. Your bariatric surgery team can help you determine which procedure is right for you and your individual situation. Certain surgeries are better for some individuals than others. Some of the most common bariatric surgeries include: Gastric Sleeve – This surgery removes a portion of the stomach to restrict the amount of food you can consume. It also reduces the hunger hormones produced, which helps decrease appetite.   Gastric Bypass – A small pouch is attached to the intestine to bypass the stomach and reduce how much food you consume.   Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding – This procedure uses an adjustable band around the stomach, creating a small stomach pouch. This pouch makes you feel fuller after eating less food.   No matter which procedure you undergo, there will be some recovery time. However, the quality of life you receive afterward far outweighs the downtime. Your doctor will work with you throughout follow-up visits to ensure you stay on track. When diet and exercise fail to produce your desired results, bariatric surgery adjusts the digestive system to assist in significant weight loss and improve your quality of life. While weight loss varies based on procedure type and by the individual, once the patient is out of surgery and in recovery, they can expect to lose an average of 50 to 100 pounds of excess weight. As a result of drastic weight loss, patients are typically faced with two common concerns: scarring and loose skin. Minimize Post-Bariatric Surgery Scarring Medical advancements make bariatric procedures minimally invasive; however, some small incisions between the belly button and chest are still necessary. Your surgeon will provide a post-surgery plan with proper wound care. Depending on the patient’s diligence, incisions typically heal and begin to transition into scars within a few months. Scarring is normal. While scars are more visible just after surgery, they will fade within the first and second years post-surgery. However, there are several things patients can do to speed up the fading process. Incision Scabs Don’t irritate or pick at your healing incisions. When you disturb your scab, it forces the skin to restart the healing process. Your skin will naturally shed the scab and heal on its own.   Prevent Infection Follow your surgeon’s recommendations for cleaning and caring for your incision site to avoid infection. One common reason people seek out bariatric surgery and weight loss is to lower their risk of developing certain medical conditions and obesity comorbidities.   Obesity comorbidities are health issues that people are more likely to develop as a result of being overweight. Some common obesity comorbidities include high blood pressure, insulin resistance, arthritis, diabetes, and gallbladder disease, but obesity is also a common cancer risk factor.   Obesity and Cancer Research has made the link between obesity and cancer very clear: obesity increases cancer risk. Studies have found that being obese increases your chances of developing the following cancer types:  Ovarian Thyroid  Uterine  Colorectal  Esophageal  Pancreatic  Breast Liver Kidney Upper Stomach Gallbladder Multiple Myeloma Meningioma Obesity Cancer Risk: Potential Causes While researchers have been able to clearly pinpoint cancer as one of the most common obesity comorbidities, the exact reason for this relationship is still unclear. Ongoing research seeks to uncover more about why obesity and cancer are related. Several theories for the link between obesity and cancer have been proposed, including: Estrogen  Adipose or fat tissue releases abnormally high amounts of a hormone called estrogen. Excess estrogen in the body may increase the risk of certain cancers like ovarian, breast, and endometrial cancers.   Inflammation  Another common cancer risk factor is inflammation. For the best possible results, it’s important to follow your bariatric procedure with healthy overall lifestyle choices. That includes making sure you’re following a proper diet and meeting your nutritional needs. It also involves staying active and committing to a regular exercise routine.   For beginners and those just beginning their weight-loss journeys, adaptive fitness is one of the best ways to start working towards this post-surgery goal.   What is Adaptive Fitness? The definition of adaptive fitness is simple: it involves adapting traditional workouts to the needs of a patient. Adaptive fitness workouts factor in a patient’s lifestyle, medical restrictions, health goals, mobility capabilities, and fitness level to ensure they can exercise without hurting themselves.   Adaptive Fitness for Bariatric Patients Adaptive fitness is an especially useful workout strategy for bariatric patients. As you begin your weight-loss journey, it’s essential to commit to lifestyle changes that make sense for your individual situation. After surgery, as you recover and work towards maintaining a healthy weight, you may have certain restrictions that make traditional exercise difficult. For example, as you heal, you’ll need to be mindful of avoiding high-intensity workouts that risk damage to your wound. Additionally, if you’re new to the fitness world, you’ll need to start off slow to prevent injuries and support your recovery.   Adaptive fitness is great for beginners and those with health restrictions because it is fully customizable. The entire goal of adaptive fitness workouts is to... --- - Published: 2022-09-29 - Modified: 2025-02-13 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/why-fad-diets-dont-work/ - Categories: Blog If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve likely come across a fad diet or two. While their promises are large, fad diets typically fail to provide the weight-loss results people are looking for. Even if they do lose weight, many people who participate in fad dieting often gain it back. This is because fad diets are short-term “solutions” to a complex problem. What is a Fad Diet? There is no shortage of fad diets, and it seems like new ones are reappearing or being revived every day. Common fad diets include: The Grapefruit Diet The Master Cleanse The Carnivore Diet The Ketogenic Diet The Atkins Diet Fad diets are typically short-term or fixed-term diets that are promoted as the fastest and best way to lose weight. They make unrealistic promises that prey on the desire for an “easy” weight-loss solution, but they are often unsustainable long term. While what they are cutting out and what they are keeping is different for each diet, fad diets usually cut aspects of a well-balanced diet. During the diet, your body will be deficient in key nutrients that it needs to function healthily. Because they only last for a fixed period, you’re also likely to gain back the weight once the diet “ends. ” The Dangers of Fad Diets Because they often cut out a section of a well-balanced diet, fad diets are often severely imbalanced. This causes your body to build up an excess of some nutrients while lacking in others. Lower health risks, decreased joint pain, and better heart health are all included in the benefits of losing weight. However, one advantage that’s often overlooked is how losing weight can benefit your finances.   Decreased Healthcare Costs You already know being overweight or obese contributes to an increased risk of serious health conditions, including: Heart disease High blood pressure Stroke Type 2 diabetes Cancer Osteoarthritis A lower risk for health complications can only mean good things for your financial savings, as it means a lower risk for hospital visits, ambulance rides, and other expensive medical care. For patients with type 2 diabetes, studies have found that losing significant weight can lead to remission. Losing weight can also improve obstructive sleep apnea, decrease high blood pressure, and improve your cholesterol levels. If you are currently paying for medication to treat one or more obesity-related conditions, losing weight may allow you to cut the cost of medication out of your life. Decreased Cost of Eating Out Regularly eating out may not be a part of your lifestyle—but if it is, losing weight can help you save money in that area. To lose weight, it’s not necessary to completely cut out fast food or your favorite restaurant dishes. You can still treat yourself occasionally, but you will need to be more conscious of what you’re eating. Diet and exercise, while the best and most efficient ways to lose weight, don’t always work for everyone. In those cases, many people turn to bariatric surgery to help them lose weight. Bariatric surgery is a major surgery that will require lifestyle changes, but before you can continue your weight-loss journey, you’ll need to navigate successful recovery post-surgery.   Bariatric Surgery Recovery  Recovering from bariatric surgery should not be viewed in terms of how to do so quickly—the goal should be a complete, healthy recovery. Each bariatric surgery patient recovers differently, but there are a few tips every patient can utilize. Bariatric Surgery Recovery Diet Tips Based on your nutritional needs, your doctor or surgical team will help you plan your diet post-surgery. During your recovery in the hospital, you’ll stick to clear liquids to keep you hydrated and avoid irritating your stomach. In the days following surgery, you’ll move on to a full liquid diet, then a soft foods diet, before returning to a regular diet. It’s important to remember your stomach will be able to hold much less food following surgery, so portions should be small and nutrient dense. Eat slowly and chew your meals thoroughly to avoid upsetting your stomach. Protein is extremely important following surgery, but avoid meats that are harder to digest, like steak.   When it comes to drinking, avoid carbonated beverages, chewing ice, and drinking through a straw, all of which can introduce air into your stomach... --- - Published: 2022-09-08 - Modified: 2025-07-05 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/how-alcohol-affects-your-weight-loss/ - Categories: Blog Trying to lose weight can be stressful. Between finding time for exercise, planning and shopping for meals, and counting calories, many bariatric patients find themselves looking for a way to relax.   For thousands of years, humans have used alcohol, or the social interaction around drinking alcohol, to relieve stress. However, for bariatric patients especially, this habit can be extremely detrimental to the success of your weight-loss journey. Alcohol and Weight Loss Empty Calories If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ve probably heard alcohol is full of “empty calories”—but what, exactly, does that mean? First, let’s take a look at the calorie count of a few common alcoholic beverages: 153 calories in a regular 12 oz beer 97-116 calories in a 1. 5 oz serving of distilled alcohol, depending on proof About 125 calories in a 5 oz glass of wine, depending on variety Despite those calorie counts, alcohol has no nutritional value. It doesn’t benefit you or even fill you up, like food does—hence, “empty calories. ” In addition, your body recognizes alcohol as a toxin. It’ll work harder to rid your system of alcohol, burning the calories from the drinks first, while calories gained from important macronutrients are ignored. Krissy Maurin, MS, ACT, explains in an article with Health, “The main effect of alcohol is to reduce the amount of fat your body can burn for energy. You are basically shutting down your metabolism, which then leads to weight gain. Some surgical procedures will require supplementation after surgery, as your body adjusts to its new normal. Some procedures, like gastric banding, only require a daily multivitamin. However, other malabsorptive surgeries may require long-term use of supplements. Before moving forward with your decision, follow this guide to vitamin and supplement regimens after bariatric surgery.   Common Nutrient Deficiencies Bariatric surgery changes multiple facets of your digestion. Some surgeries can even alter how your body absorbs nutrients. These changes often require extensive supplements after bariatric surgery. Some of the changes your body can experience are common nutrient deficiencies of Iron, B12, Calcium, and Vitamin D.   These four nutrients are incredibly important and can lead to long-term health problems if not properly managed. A lack of iron and B12 can increase your risk for anemia and even lead to some neurological issues. Long-term deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D can result in bone and kidney disease. You may experience these deficiencies depending on the bariatric solution you choose. There are malabsorptive procedures and non-malabsorptive procedures–each with different vitamin and supplement regimens.   Malabsorptive Procedures Some procedures, like gastric bypass, are malabsorptive. This means that they alter the way that nutrients are absorbed by your body. For these procedures, more extensive supplement regimens are necessary. You’ll likely take several supplements with each meal to help your body receive the nutrients it needs. Additionally, your doctor will... --- - Published: 2022-07-07 - Modified: 2025-02-13 - URL: https://bariatrics.wellstar.org/blog/what-are-the-benefits-of-laparoscopic-adjustable-banding/ - Categories: Blog An adjustable gastric band is a great weight-loss tool but is it right for you? Before continuing with the gastric band, there are some things you should know. Follow this guide to learn more about adjustable gastric banding and get the expertise you need from Wellstar Georgia.   What is a Gastric Band? Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is a procedure for obesity. The gastric band is just one form of bariatric surgery, which limits the amount of food one can eat. During the procedure, an adjustable band is placed around the stomach, constricting it in the process. This constriction results in patients feeling full after eating less.   Feeling full sooner will help you establish a caloric deficit and facilitate easier weight loss with the gastric band. Patients report substantial weight loss in the first year or two after surgery, with a higher probability of keeping it off in the long-term.   Why should you choose the gastric band over other procedures? There are many benefits to the gastric band, which are not available with other bariatric procedures.   The Benefits of an Adjustable Gastric Band A gastric band can help you lose weight, but there are multiple bariatric procedures to choose from that claim similar results. High blood pressure, though sometimes unnoticed, leads to complications like heart disease, organ failure, and stroke. Because this problem is rising each year, it’s important to explore effective treatment options. One of the best treatments, with a focus on long-term results, is bariatric surgery.   The Rise of Hypertension Hypertension rose dramatically over the last twenty years. In the late 90s, approximately 29% of adults in the US suffered from hypertension. Today, according to data from the CDC, that number now sits at 47%. With so many Americans suffering from high blood pressure and a sharp increase in obesity, there should be a renewed focus to address it.   To know if you have hypertension, you need to measure your blood pressure. Hypertension occurs with a systolic blood pressure higher than 140mm Hg and diastolic numbers higher than 90mm Hg. If your numbers are high, then you should prioritize care to avoid damaging your long-term health.   How can people suffering from hypertension and prehypertension stay healthy and reverse their symptoms? You can manage hypertension by losing weight and making healthy lifestyle changes.   Prioritizing Weight Loss As your body weight increases, so does your blood pressure. Some of these treatments are effective, but long-term results don’t come without lifestyle changes. Your recovery begins now, and soon after, you’ll be able to start your exercise journey. What should your exercise timeline look like after weight-loss surgery? The answer will be slightly different for everyone, depending on factors like the type of surgery you received, your starting weight, and your healing process.   Your doctor and surgical team will help you design a physical activity routine that fits your needs and goals, and you should always speak with them before incorporating new exercises into your plan after surgery. Below, we have provided an example of what a typical post-bariatric exercise timeline may look like. Days After Surgery In the days after surgery, you’ll still be recovering, so it’s important to start slow and listen to your body. If you don’t have much experience with exercise, it’s important to learn the difference between pain and soreness, especially around the site of your laparoscopic incisions.   Your exercise routine should start just a few days after surgery. Begin talking short 5 to 10-minute walks every day, which will help increase blood flow, speed your recovery, and decrease your chances of blood clots. Aim to build up to 30-minute walks at least 5 days a week. If you find you’re unable to walk continuously for 30 minutes, you can break the time into shorter walks scattered throughout the day. Avoid anything more strenuous than walking and light, low-impact exercise until 6 weeks after surgery. And while that is partially true, the reality is far more complex. There are a multitude of factors, from personal choices to socioeconomic status, that can contribute to your likelihood of being overweight or obese. A thorough understanding of which of these factors are affecting your weight will help you and your surgical team design an effective diet and exercise plan post-bariatric surgery. Genetic Factors Contributing to Obesity Your genes determine how much body fat you store and where you store it, as well as the speed of your metabolism and your body’s appetite regulation. In addition, a child born to overweight or obese parent has a higher change of struggling with their weight—this is due to the inherited genetic factors, as well as learned behavioral and eating habits. Socioeconomic and Environmental Factors Contributing to Obesity  People who live in low-income areas may not have access to public gyms or may not be able to afford a membership. These areas tend to have fewer opportunities for outdoor exercise, like bike or walking trails. People in these communities also may not have access to affordable, healthy food, whether it’s due to a lack of options or lack of transportation—private or public. These areas, sometimes called food deserts, often contain a variety of fast-food stops that are affordable for the average income but unhealthy, leading to weight gain. Then, the surgeon removes attaches your small intestine to that pouch. This allows your small intestine to digest the enzymes and acid produced by your stomach. It also reduces your body’s ability to absorb calories and nutrients, since it bypasses most of the small intestine; this makes it easier to lose weight.   After gastric bypass surgery, there are strict dietary guidelines patients need to follow in order to lose the weight, keep the weight off, and stay healthy in general. Along with exercise, proper hydration, and good sleep, diet is a vital part of your weight loss journey post-surgery.   Post-Surgery Diet Since gastric bypass surgery makes your stomach smaller, you will need to change both your diet and eating habits. After your procedure, your health care provider will provide guidelines regarding the foods you can eat, along with the foods you should avoid. It’s recommended to stay on a strict liquid diet for the first 2-3 weeks after bariatric surgery, unless told otherwise by your surgeon. After 2-3 weeks then you can slowly add in solid foods.   Gastric bypass patients need to be aware of portion size—since your stomach is smaller, you will feel full a lot faster. While many people try, or have tried, to lose weight, traditional methods of diet and exercise don’t always work for everyone. For those who reach the qualifications, bariatric surgery is a common option. Not only does bariatric surgery assist with weight loss, but it can also help resolve conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and more, leading to stark improvements in general health. Two of the most common types of bariatric surgery are the gastric sleeve surgery and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. While both options can help you kickstart your weight-loss journey, one procedure may be the better choice for you.   Gastric Bypass Surgery vs. Gastric Sleeve Surgery Both gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery reduce the size of your stomach into a small pouch, restricting the amount of food you can consume. Your production of the hunger hormone (ghrelin) is also reduced, helping you control your feelings of hunger. During the gastric sleeve procedure, the surgeon will permanently remove 80% of your stomach, leaving behind a banana-shaped “sleeve. ” Depending on how you’re feeling after surgery, you may need to stay in the hospital for a few days until you can keep fluids down. Typically, gastric sleeve patients will need to wait longer to see weight-loss results post-surgery. For many people, food cues play a role in developing unhealthy eating behaviors, like stress eating, so a thorough analysis of your personal food cues may help curb these habits.   A food cue is trigger that causes the urge to eat. They can be triggered in a variety of ways, whether it’s specific smells, feeling certain emotions, or food advertisements. As opposed to hunger cues, which are physical signs of hunger, food cues may cause you the urge to eat, even if you’re not hungry. Understanding the difference between hunger cues and food cues is important for everyone, especially those looking to lose weight.   Unmanaged Food Cues Food cues can cause the urge to eat even when you aren’t hungry. Unmanaged, this can easily turn into boredom-based or mindless eating, which can sabotage your ability to lose weight. Food cues are, quite literally, everywhere in the world, from fast food commercials to the smell of your coworker’s food. Learning how to manage them is key to your weight-loss success. Overcoming Food Cues Food cues are entirely external, so turning to your internal hunger cues is a great way to combat that urge to eat. Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common obesity comorbidities—so common that the occurrence of diabetes in obese individuals has been unofficially dubbed “diabesity. ” How Diabetes is Linked to Obesity  Besides obesity, there are multiple other factors that affect an individual’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes, including their family history, age, race, and medical history. However, being overweight or obese is the largest risk factor for type 2 diabetes. 90% of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight, and those who are overweight are six times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Why? Especially in those with a high amount of abdominal fat, research suggests excess lipids accumulate in the liver, leading to a lower sensitivity to insulin. This insulin resistance, in turn, leads to type 2 diabetes. Diabesity and Weight Loss Between the multiple risks of both obesity and diabetes, it’s safe to say that treating diabesity is essential to improving your overall health. While there is no cure for type 2 diabetes, weight loss is the best way to manage the condition, and some patients even enter remission. Not getting enough sleep or not getting quality sleep can make you more susceptible to diseases, affect your ability to focus, and even raise your risks for health problems like high blood pressure and diabetes. For those trying to lose weight and those who are post-bariatric surgery, sleep is especially important for successful, lasting weight loss. The Importance of Sleep for Weight Loss While scientists are still trying to fully understand the link between sleep and weight loss, studies have shown that not getting enough sleep can compromise a healthy weight-loss plan. Getting insufficient sleep is linked to decreased impulse control and poor decision-making. This means you might be more likely to succumb to tempting comfort foods or listen to the voice telling you to skip a workout.   Obviously, poor sleep decreases your energy levels, leaving you too tired to tackle your workout for the day. In addition, it can make activities that require coordination and balance, like weightlifting, extremely unsafe.   Running on low sleep also has been shown to increase the body’s production of ghrelin, the “hunger hormone,” and decrease the production of leptin, which helps regulate hunger and energy. This hormonal imbalance makes you more likely to overeat and turn to unhealthy options when hungry. That said, the first step toward making a well-informed decision is understanding what each of the common types of bariatric surgery entail.   Gastric Sleeve During gastric sleeve surgery, also called a sleeve gastrectomy, the majority of the stomach is removed. The remaining portion is about 1/10 of the original size and shaped like a banana—hence, the “sleeve. ”  The smaller stomach can hold much less food than it originally could, leading to a caloric decrease that helps patients rapidly lose weight. In addition, the removal of most of the stomach decreases hunger-causing hormones like ghrelin and leptin, causing patients to feel less hungry less often. Sleeve gastrostomies are the most commonly performed bariatric procedure in the United States. To qualify for surgery, patients need a BMI of 40 or higher. They can also qualify with a BMI of 35 if they have one or more obesity-related conditions that could be relieved with weight-loss, like: High blood pressure Obstructive sleep apnea Diabetes Joint pain Gastric sleeve surgery takes about an hour and is minimally invasive, performed through several small incisions with... --- ---
